Don Andersen is the Senior Counsel in the Atlanta office. He is an experienced aviation, product liability, insurance defense and intellectual property litigator in federal and state courts throughout the United States. He has been a member of The State Bar of Georgia for 43 years and a member of The Florida Bar for 28 years. He is Board Certified in Aviation Law by The Florida Bar and currently is the Vice-Chairperson of The Florida Bar Board Certification Committee. He is also a registered mediator and arbitrator in Georgia.
Mr. Andersen’s experience includes defense of airlines, aircraft, engine and component manufacturers, maintenance facilities, and aircraft owners and pilots in accident litigation. He also has represented aircraft and aviation companies in intellectual property ownership and infringement litigation, including cases involving theft and misappropriation of type certificate data and other trade secret and proprietary information.
Don Andersen is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous articles over the past four decades, including having the distinction of being one of two lecturers who have given the annual survey of recent developments in aviation law in each of the past four decades. He values these opportunities because it enables him to stay abreast of cases and developments in aviation litigation and procedure that provide a broad and in-depth perspective in all of his cases. He is also past-Chairperson of the DRI Aviation Product Liability Specialized Litigation Group.
Mr. Andersen’s trial experience includes being Associate General Counsel of Piper Aircraft Corporation responsible for and participating in the trial of numerous Piper product liability cases throughout the United States. He has been lead trial counsel in aviation, product lability, insurance coverage, aircraft finance and intellectual property cases in federal and state court cases in Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.
Mr. Andersen’s appellate experience includes representation of clients in the United States Supreme Court, numerous federal appellate circuits and extensive experience in the state appellate courts of Georgia and Florida.
Don Andersen is as an active commercial, instrument and multi-engine rated pilot, and aircraft owner. He is also a founding officer and past-President of the Aero Club of Metropolitan Atlanta. He also currently serves on the EAA Legal Advisory Council and is a long-time member of the Aviation Insurance Association, the Lawyer Pilot Bar Association and an associate member of the Organization of Flying Adjusters.
He is a member of the Patent Bar and is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is past chairman of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Section of The State Bar of Georgia.
Mr. Andersen is a 1973 graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology, with honors, in Engineering Science and Mechanics, and a 1976 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude, where he was the Articles Editor of The Georgia Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. He also attended the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1972, and served on active duty from 1968-1970 as a member of the U.S. Naval Security Group.
Mr. Andersen stays active in professional, community and religious organizations. He has been a volunteer for over twenty years in the Metropolitan Atlanta Recovery Residences, a drug and alcohol residential recovery program for men. He is also active in developing programs and providing emergency and long-term shelter for homeless families and individuals, including homeless veterans.
